Claire Robertson From Woolworths to Wellworths
In March 2009, amid doom and gloom headlines, Woolworths manager Claire Robertson became a household name and a beacon of hope for many businesses when she defied the recession and re-launched her Dorchester store as Wellworths.
While media reports concentrated on the demise of over 800 Woolworths stores across the country, Claire won the financial backing of a consortium led by the owner of her premises. This enabled her to turn her dream of re-opening her store into reality. She knew that the Dorchester store was profitable and in a prime location within the town and the support of her staff gave her the confidence needed to seize the ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.
Claire joined Woolworths at the age of 15 working as a Saturday girl at the Yeovil store. She trained as an assistant manager at the age of 19 and after spending time at other stores, returned as Manager of the Dorchester store for five years before it closed.
The Wellworths store was offically launched on 11th March 2009 by DJ Chris Evans. The opening attracted hundreds of well-wishers and was covered by media outlets from across the globe.
Claire re-employed twenty one of the original staff, many of whom had worked for Woolworths for over thirty years. Wellworths, know locally as ‘Wellies’, has become a down- to-earth family store offering what people want at the right price. The new store sells kitchenware, DIY, toys, party goods and seasonal lines and even features the famous Pick ‘n’ Mix.
Just three months after its launch Wellworths welcomed its 100,000 customer.
